About Benchmark Senior Living
Benchmark Senior Living is a New England senior living company headquartered in Waltham, Massachusetts. Tom Grape founded it in 1997 and still leads it as chairman and CEO. Its website lists 69 community pages across nine states, and the company also runs four continuing care retirement communities under their own names: The Commons in Lincoln and New Pond Village in Massachusetts, and Meadow Ridge and Edgehill in Connecticut. Massachusetts is the core market with 31 communities, followed by Connecticut with 19 and New Hampshire with 6, with smaller groups in New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, Maine and Virginia.
Memory care is what Benchmark is known for. It calls the service Mind and Memory Care, offers it at 66 of its 69 listed communities, and says 11 of its buildings are dedicated to memory care alone. Assisted living is available at 57 locations, usually with memory care in the same building, while independent living is limited to a few campuses and the four continuing care communities, which add skilled nursing and rehabilitation on site. Each resident receives a care plan built from interviews with the resident and family.
Several Benchmark communities in New Jersey, Vermont and Virginia are new and marked as coming soon or recently opened, so families looking there should ask about opening dates and staffing. Across the portfolio, it is worth asking how the monthly rate is set for each care level, whether respite stays are available, and how a move from assisted living to memory care is handled inside the same building.
