Legend Senior Living Communities

Legend Senior Living is a family-run senior housing company based in Wichita, Kansas. Tim Buchanan, who started in assisted living in 1991, founded it in 2001, and Matt Buchanan, from the next generation of the family, now serves as Co-CEO. Its community finder lists 77 locations in 8 states. Pennsylvania has the most with 21, followed by Florida with 17, Oklahoma with 16, Kansas with 9 and Texas with 8, with smaller groups in Colorado, Missouri and New Jersey.

Most Legend buildings offer assisted living and memory care, and a smaller group adds independent living on the same campus, as at Rivermont in Norman and Park West Plaza in Wichita. In Pennsylvania the assisted level is licensed as personal care, the state's name for it. Short respite stays are offered at many locations. The company uses several community names, including The Windsor and The Gables in Florida, Arbor House in Oklahoma, and Hemsley House, Ridgecrest and Revelle in Pennsylvania. Several of the Hemsley House buildings near Philadelphia and in Colorado Springs were Sunrise communities until Legend took them over.

Legend describes its approach as pairing daily care with structured programs for the mind, body and spirit, along with chef-prepared dining, housekeeping, transportation and help with medications and dressing. Pricing is set community by community. Because a number of buildings changed names recently, families should ask each community when Legend took over, which care levels are licensed on site, and how the monthly rate changes as care needs grow.
